St Lucia and iSimangaliso at a glance
St Lucia, in South Africa, is the base for exploring the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a stretch of lake, estuary and coast in northern KwaZulu-Natal. It is not the Caribbean island of the same name. UNESCO lists the site as the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and Maputo National Park, in South Africa and Mozambique. It was first inscribed in 1999 and the boundary was extended in 2025.
The park authority describes several areas, including the Eastern Shores with Cape Vidal and Lake St Lucia. The town, a boat cruise and the road access into a park area are not the same thing, so check which one your plan needs. St Lucia is north of Durban and can be planned together with Hluhluwe-iMfolozi as one northern trip with a night in between. This page is independent and not run by the park.

What to do
Four parts of a St Lucia visit.
Estuary boat cruise
The park authority lists boat cruises for watching hippos and crocodiles, with Heritage Tours and Safaris as the operator of the estuary cruises. You see the animals from the water, which is the usual way to get close to them without walking among them.
Eastern Shores and Cape Vidal
This is the coastal part of the park. The authority describes a stretch of beach, dune and forest, and names whale and turtle seasons. Observation is possible, but never promised.
Lake St Lucia
Lake St Lucia is a separate part of the park, based on the lake itself. The authority treats it as its own destination, not as an extra on the coast.
The town
St Lucia is a small base for the boat trips and for park visits. Check availability for your dates before you commit to a night here.

Boat cruise times
One operator's published times. They can change with the season.
| Item | Listed detail |
|---|---|
| Length | 2 hours |
| Departures | 06:00, 08:00, 10:00, 14:00 and 16:00, plus a midday departure listed as "12:00 am" |
| Season | Times can vary by season |
The midday time is written in a way that could be read two ways, so confirm it before you plan around it. Hippos and crocodiles are the main animals on the cruise. No cruise can promise a sighting.
Safety, beaches and fees
The park authority describes the coast at Mission Rocks as unsuitable for swimming because of currents and rough sea. Do not swim on the rocks or in the tidal zone. Hippos and crocodiles are dangerous, so do not approach or feed any wildlife. The authority gives no fixed distance, so keep as far back as the animal allows and follow guide and sign instructions.
Gate fees apply at the Eastern Shores and change over time, so older price lists no longer apply. Ask for the current tariff for your group before you drive in, and check the opening times for your date.

Seasons and planning
Periods from the park authority. Watching wildlife is a possibility, never a promise.
| Subject | Period or rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Humpback whales off Cape Vidal | About June to November | Winter and spring are the months to look for them |
| Turtle nesting | November to March | Summer months; follow guide instructions on the beach |
| Hippos and crocodiles on the estuary | Boat cruises, several departures a day | Pick an early or late slot and confirm the time |
| Swimming at Mission Rocks | Not suitable, per the authority | Stay out of the water there |
| World Heritage status | Listed 1999, boundary extended 2025 | Separate from the Drakensberg site and its tickets |
A good plan has three parts. Book the boat cruise for a time you have confirmed. Decide which park area you want, because the Eastern Shores and Lake St Lucia are different destinations. Then leave room in the day, since road and gate conditions can change. If you continue to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, work out each park's gate hours for your month.

St Lucia: frequently asked questions
Which St Lucia is this?
The town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, on the edge of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. It is not the Caribbean island.
Can I see hippos and crocodiles?
Estuary cruises are run for that purpose, and the park authority confirms hippo and crocodile watching from boats. A sighting is never guaranteed.
When is the whale season?
The park authority gives roughly June to November for humpback whales off Cape Vidal. Turtles nest from November to March.
Is it safe to swim at the beach?
Not at Mission Rocks, which the authority calls unsuitable because of currents and rough sea. For other places, follow local warnings and do not swim where there are no clear signs.
How much is the park entry?
Gate fees apply at the Eastern Shores and change over time. Ask for the current tariff for your group at the gate or when you book. Boat cruises are priced separately from park entry.
How do I get there from Durban?
By road, northward. Check the drive time in your route planner and add time for the park access roads.
