What to do in Umhlanga
Five things that are worth a stop.
Walk the promenade
The O'Connor Promenade follows the coast for 2.7 km. It is a path for walking and watching the sea, and it is best used in daylight. UK travel advice sees a higher risk of violent crime after dark, in tourist areas too.
See the lighthouse
The lighthouse stands on the coast next to the promenade and the pier. It is a landmark to photograph from outside. Do not plan on going inside or climbing it, because access and tickets are not confirmed.
Walk the lagoon path
At the end of the promenade a path leads through the uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. The 2025 guide describes coastal forest, boardwalks over the Ohlange River and a path to the lagoon. Check on the spot whether an entry fee or a booking applies.
Go shopping at Gateway
Gateway is the large shopping and leisure centre in the area. Hours differ between shops. One store lists Monday to Thursday 09:00 to 19:00, Friday and Saturday 09:00 to 21:00 and Sunday 09:00 to 18:00. Treat that as one shop's hours, not the centre's.
Visit the Sharks Board
The KZN Sharks Board runs the nets along the coast. Its audiovisual presentation lasts 26 minutes and is followed by a shark dissection. The page says the office must confirm a visit and names a minimum of 15 people. Ask the office for current dates and prices before you go.
Swimming at Umhlanga
The 2025 Umhlanga Tourism guide describes Main Beach and Bronze Beach with shark nets and professional lifeguards. The guide is not a duty roster, so look for the lifeguards and the flags on the day. Swim only between the red and yellow flags, as UK travel advice puts it.
Nets are not a closed barrier. The KZN Sharks Board says sharks can pass over and under them and around the ends. Swimming can also be banned for swell, strong currents or a large shark sighting. The beaches page explains the rules and the water quality tests.
