Where to Stay in Durban

Durban's areas differ in what is on the doorstep. This guide compares five locations by what is nearby and how you get there, and lists what to ask before you book.

Choosing an area

In Durban the area you pick decides what is on your doorstep: the sea, restaurants, the gardens or the airport road. There are five locations worth knowing: Umhlanga Rocks, the beachfront at North Beach, the Berea, Morningside and the Ballito and Zimbali area further north.

This page is an independent guide. It names hotels only where their address or location gives a useful anchor, and it does not rank them or rate any area for safety or price. Room rates depend on dates, room type and demand, so compare them on the booking date you need. Rand prices (R) are those published for 2026.

The transfer prices come from one operator's list, valid to 31 December 2026. For 3 to 7 people by minibus the list shows R1,150 to Durban City and Umhlanga, and R1,400 to Ballito, Zimbali and Salt Rock. A surcharge of 10 percent applies between 23:00 and 06:00 for 1 to 4 people. There is no airport train. See the airport page.

Umhlanga Rocks and the beachfront

Umhlanga Rocks is a coastal town with a 2.7 km promenade, a lighthouse and beaches with shark nets and lifeguards, according to the 2025 Umhlanga Tourism guide. The Oyster Box is at 2 Lighthouse Road. See the Umhlanga page for the promenade, the lagoon path and the Sharks Board.

The beachfront is the Golden Mile. The Elangeni and Maharani hotel, at 63 Snell Parade, places itself on the Golden Mile at North Beach. Its check-in is from 14:00 and its check-out before 11:00. Those times belong to that hotel, not to every house. Being near the sand does not mean daily swimming is allowed. Read the beaches page.

People on the Durban promenade

The Berea, Morningside and Ballito

The Berea is where the city guide places the Durban Botanic Gardens. Entry is free and donations are welcome. Morningside is the district of Florida Road, which the guide lists with restaurants and bars.

Ballito and Zimbali lie north of Umhlanga. Zimbali Estate describes its position on the edge of Ballito and lists Zimbali Lodge and The Capital Zimbali. The transfer from the airport costs more than to Umhlanga, and it is a longer drive each day if your plans are in the city.

The German Foreign Office advises against visiting the city centre at any time of day. Keep that in mind for walks from any hotel, and see the safety page.

What to ask any hotel

Five questions that matter more than the star rating.

Backup power

Eskom reported on 16 October 2026 no national load-shedding since 16 May 2025, but local load reduction continued in parts of KwaZulu-Natal. The Elangeni and Maharani says it has backup power. Ask each hotel what the backup covers.

Water supply

Ask whether the hotel has a back-up plan for interruptions of the water supply. Power and water cuts can be local, even when the wider grid is stable.

Walking and taxis

Ask which routes the hotel suggests on foot in daylight and which taxi firm it trusts. German advice recommends reliable, pre-booked firms.

Check-in and check-out

Times differ by house. One hotel lists check-in from 14:00 and check-out before 11:00. Ask for yours, especially with an early or late flight.

Transfer and parking

Ask about the airport transfer and parking before you book. Parking is not guaranteed at every hotel.
